It's definitely starting to warm up outside (the mosquitoes are noticing too) and with that comes the pure joy of an outdoor lifestyle! Hiking, camping, gardening and surfing (or just lying on the beach enjoying a good book) are just a few of our families favorite activities this time of year.... what does your family enjoy doing when the weather warms a bit?
We are grateful to doTerra this month for providing us with natural alternatives to the deet containing bug sprays and yucky chemical ingredients of the general sunscreens as we venture outdoors to battle the sun and bugs of Florida! We've included a few of our favorite recipes for you below too. Be sure to reach out and let us know what you think?

Natural Insect Repellent
Add 40 drops Terrashield, 10 drops Arborvitae, 10 drops Rosemary, and 10 drops Lemongrass to a 4 oz glass spray bottle. Add 2 Tbsp Aloe juice. Fill remainder with witch hazel. Keep in refrigerator to help cool down on hot summer days!

Other possible recipes:
Utilize same method as above but exchange essential oils with 20 drops Rosemary, 15 drops Lemongrass, 10 drops Cedarwood, 5 drops Clove, 5 drops Peppermint, and 3 drops Geranium.

Use these same essential oils amounts to make one 6-8oz mason jar candle to repel the insects in your surroundings using the method below:

Natural Insect Repellent Candle
  1. Melt 1 lb. of soy wax (16 oz.) using a double boiler. Heat wax until completely melted. Move off of heat source and allow to stop steaming but do not wait too long.
  2. Add essential oils of choice. When adding essential oils, stir well and remove from heat. Do not let wax continue to heat as the essential oils will evaporate out of the wax.
  3. While the wax is cooling, place a wick sticker on the bottom of the pretabbed wick and center the wick inside the mason jar or container of choice. Repeat this step for the remaining jars.
  4. Carefully pour the wax evenly into the 3 jars.
  5. Place the wick bar or a fork with the center peak facing up on top of your jar. Pull wick taut and gently press wick into the opening of the wick bar or fork. This will keep the wick straight and centered while the candle is cooling.
  6. For best results, let the candles cool at room temperature overnight.
  7. Trim wick to 1/4 in. before lighting. (Do this each time you light it) and enjoy your candle!

For added energy on hot summer days try taking a Mito 2 Max internally plus using Lemon and Peppermint on the wrists and inhaling deeply!

Sting Relief

DIY Natural Sunscreen Spray
Combine into 2 oz glass spray bottle, adding essential oils first:
15 drops Helichrysum            20 drops Lavender      5 drops Myrrh        Top off with Fractionated Coconut Oil

DIY Natural Sunscreen
Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup shea butter
  • 1/8 cup jojoba oil
  • 2 tbsp. beeswax granules
  • 1-2 tbsp. non-nano zinc oxide powder
  • 1 tsp. carrot seed oil (OPTIONAL — This is NOT carrot seed essential oil. This will add a significant raise in SPF to your finished product).
  • Essential oils of your choice (Helichrysum, Lavender, Myrrh)

Instructions
1. Using a double boiler, melt your coconut oil, jojoba oil, beeswax, and shea butter together. The beeswax will be the last to melt.
2. When the beeswax is melted, remove the mixture from the heat and let cool slightly. If you’re using zinc oxide, whisk it in at this point, being careful not to create a lot of dust. If there are some lumps, that’s OK. They will break up when you whip the body butter in step 4.
3. Move the mixture to the fridge for 15-30 minutes. You want it to start to set up, but still be soft enough to whip.
4. Take the mixture out of the fridge and using a stand mixer or hand mixer, start to whip it. Drizzle in the carrot seed oil, and any essential oils of your choice, and continue whipping until the mixture is light and fluffy. Store in mason jar.
5. Use as you would any regular sunscreen. Application rates will depend on your activity and exposure to water. Store in a glass container in the fridge between uses.

DIY Cool Down Spray
Combine 5 drops Peppermint with water into a 2 oz glass spray bottle and apply to neck and wrists to cool down the body. Shake before use each time!

DIY After Sun Soothing Spray
Combine the following in a 4 oz glass spray bottle:
¼ cup aloe vera juice              2 Tbsp Fractionated Coconut Oil       ½ tsp Vitamin E oil
5 drops each Peppermint, Melaleuca, and Lavender essential oils

Use Deep Blue Rub for sore muscles!
