Mind, body, spirit. These embody the core of a holistic approach to health and vitality. The mind, body and spirit must be brought into unison in order to prevent illness, fatigue and lack of focus in life. The key to improving your overall health and well-being can be found through the utilization of two ancient techniques that have been practiced for centuries. Yoga and the use of essential oils, when used correctly, have the ability to not only improve your physical body but will enhance your mind and spirit by engaging the deepest parts of your mind. The literal translation of the word yoga is “to yoke” or bring together. A disciplined yoga practice begins when we can let go and learn to disconnect with the outside world to gain a better understanding of our internal thoughts and emotions. We attain this through physical poses, breathing techniques, and meditation. Creating harmony in mind, body and spirit. When you do this under the supervision of a certified yoga instructor you can positively affect your mental state and gain clarity in your practice. Adding in the power of essential oils allows you to enhance this experience to levels that have incredible healing powers. Our limbic system is responsible for our body’s emotional responses. In order to release emotions that have taken control or become “stuck” within the mind, we can use essential oils. Essential oils work primarily through our sense of smell through the olfactory system. When paired with yoga, aromatherapy can reach into the deepest parts of the brain and begin the process of emotional release before we even get to the physical yoga practice. Aromatherapy, like yoga, strives to support the wellbeing of our body and mind. The key is finding which essential oils our body needs in that moment, which is where a certified yoga professional can help. In a yoga practice, the most common way to use essential oils effectively is through aromatic or topical application. Here are a few guidelines as you begin to introduce essential oils into your yoga practice. 1) Consult with a certified, experienced yoga practitioner to make sure you’re using them correctly through your yoga practice. 2) When applying topically, make sure to use a carrier oil. For example, mix a few drops with almond oil, avocado oil, fractionated coconut oil, or grapeseed oil. 3) High quality essential oils are very potent, just a drop or two have all the power you’ll need for your yoga practice. 4) Know your oils. It’s important to know the benefits and contraindications for the oil you’re using. Essential oils are powerful therapeutic agents and you want to make sure you’re using them correctly and in the most effective manner. When you are working to live a holistic life, it is important to strive for deeper connections. Understanding the mind-body connection and learning awareness of our emotions is important. Essential oils and yoga together can be the most powerful tool for self- healing. Whether emotionally, physically, or spiritually, yoga and aromatherapy can be just the combination your body and mind need to create harmony.
